The growing mass timber industry will require a growing number of experts on an engineering and manufacturing level. As a leading mass timber connection system supplier, we support the education of the next generation of mass timber engineers through applied research at a variety of Universities across North America.
Understanding the behavior of fasteners in CLT connections is one crucial element of design. Simple shear connection testing successfully demonstrated the governing boundary conditions for achieving ductile failure modes. Students are able to play with influencing parameters through varying embedment depth in main and side member, side member wood species and materials; glulam or Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT). The effect of head diameter and the associated rope effect was demonstrated. This testing was done in collaboration with the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Forestry.
